We have a new resident at the cafe! A Siberian chipmunk has taken up residence in a pile of rocks that we constructed in the hope of attracting such an animal. The Siberian chipmunk is typically very small about 18-25cm including the tail which takes up a third of the total length! They are very timid, as is expected, as almost all carnivores bigger than it prey on it. From now this guy will be busy making a burrow and storing food to survive the cold winter. I expect it will soon be cramming mouthfuls of sunflower seeds to transport to its den. As they usually pair up and share a burrow during winter we can hopefully see another chipmunk during the following months.
At the moment we are seeing this chipmunk daily. It has been appearing from 12 noon to about 3pm.
